Cafeteria Manager (Multi-Site)

The Cafeteria Manager (Multi-Site) provides on-site manager coverage at any school assigned when a cafeteria manager is out, assuming full responsibility for daily cafeteria operations. When manager coverage is not needed, this position redirects time toward other duties as assigned under the direction of the Area Manager and Area Coordinator.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or GED required. Associate degree preferred.
  • Certifications/Licenses: ServSafe certification required prior to date of hire. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required for daily travel between assigned schools.
  • Experience: 2 years of food service experience required. 1 year in a lead or manager role preferred. Experience using electronic food production records, inventory systems, and point-of-sale (POS) systems required. Supervisory experience in food service or a related service environment preferred. Experience in K12 education or public sector preferred.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the first line of coverage for any cafeteria manager absence across the cluster's assigned schools; reports to the site and assumes full manager responsibilities for the duration of the absence.
  • Maintains readiness to deploy to any assigned school with minimal notice, with availability beginning at 6:00 AM; keeps the Area Manager and Area Coordinator informed of availability and current coverage assignments.
  • During coverage assignment, the multisite manager:
    • Supervises, trains, schedules, and evaluates cafeteria staff and coordinates daily work assignments.
    • Supervises food preparation, cooking, serving, sanitation, cash handling, POS operations, and other daily cafeteria activities.
    • Participates in food preparation and meal service as needed to support cafeteria operations.
    • Ensures meals are prepared and served in accordance with approved menus, recipes, nutritional requirements, food safety standards, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
    • Orders food, supplies, and USDA commodities from approved sources and verifies deliveries for accuracy.
    • Maintains appropriate inventory levels and ensures food, supplies, and equipment are properly received, stored, recorded, and accounted for.
    • Manages cafeteria food and labor costs and monitors operations to support efficient use of resources.
    • Manages cash-handling activities, including daily transactions, reconciliation, deposits, and required financial documentation.
    • Maintains accurate food production, inventory, cash, POS, and other required operational records and documentation.
    • Maintains organized and sanitary storage, food preparation, serving, and work areas in accordance with applicable safety and sanitation requirements.
    • Ensures staff compliance with established food preparation, sanitation, safety, production, and operational procedures.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with staff, students, school personnel, vendors, and other stakeholders at each site covered, representing APS Nutrition Services consistently across assignments.
  • Maintains confidentiality of school-specific staffing, performance, and operational information; does not discuss one school's personnel matters, conflicts, or concerns with staff or leadership at another site.
  • Required to have prompt, regular attendance in person and be available to work on-site at any assigned cluster/school during regular business hours and as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator or their representative.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of food preparation, handling, sanitation, and food safety practices.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements governing school nutrition programs and meal preparation.
  • Knowledge of inventory control, food production records, and point-of-sale systems.
  • Knowledge of basic financial practices related to food costs, labor, cash handling, and daily transactions.
  • Strong leadership, supervisory, and staff development skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational, recordkeeping, and time management skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and manage multiple operational priorities.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to different site operations, staff, and school communities with minimal notice.

Compensation:

Salary Grade: CM Salary Range: Salary Schedules - Atlanta Public Schools Work Year: 197 Days

Physical Abilities and Working Conditions:

  • Vision: Ability to read small print and view a computer screen for prolonged periods.
  • Hearing: Ability to tolerate exposure to noisy conditions.
  • Speech: Ability to be understood in face-to-face communications, to speak with a level of proficiency and volume to be understood over a telephone or computer.
  • Upper Body Mobility: Ability to use hands to grasp, and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers, twist and bend at wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; turn, raise, and lower head.
  • Lower Body Mobility: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods with limited sitting; move throughout kitchen, storage, serving, and cafeteria areas; bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb stairs when necessary, and maintain mobility required to perform essential job functions.
  • Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull, and/or carry objects that weigh as much as 25 or more pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds on an infrequent basis. Incumbent may be required to physically restrain parties involved in a conflict.
  • Environmental Requirements: Ability to encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work independently; work indoors; travel between school sites throughout the workday. Ability to work in environments with varying temperatures, including exposure to kitchen heat, refrigeration units, and outdoor conditions while traveling between school sites.
  • Mental Requirements: Ability to read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copy, compare, compile and coordinate information and records.
