We are seeking an experienced Insurance Premium Auditor specializing in Workers' Compensation to perform accurate and efficient premium audits for commercial and small-business accounts. The Auditor will verify payroll, job classifications, payroll taxes and other exposures to determine final premium, ensure compliance with NCCI and applicable state rules (including MWCIA where applicable), produce clear audit reports, and work closely with insureds, agents, and underwriting teams to resolve audit findings.
Key responsibilities include:
- Plan and conduct on-site and desk premium audits of workers' compensation policies to verify payroll, classifications, subcontractor usage, and other exposure bases.
- Review payroll records, tax filings, general ledgers, and supporting documentation to determine accurate premium calculations and estimate audit adjustments.
- Apply NCCI rules, state-specific rating manuals, and MWCIA or other applicable state guidelines to ensure compliance and consistent premium determination.
- Prepare detailed audit reports and workpapers documenting findings, premium adjustments, and recommended corrections; communicate results to insureds, agents, and underwriting staff.
- Use audit and policy management systems to record findings, process endorsements, and update policy information in a timely manner.
- Collaborate with underwriting, claims, and agent/broker partners to resolve discrepancies, provide explanations of audit outcomes, and support policyholder inquiries.
- Identify potential premium recapture opportunities and escalate suspect or fraudulent activity to appropriate teams.
- Meet production, quality, and turnaround targets while maintaining accurate and organized audit files and documentation.
- Participate in training, quality reviews, and process improvement initiatives to enhance audit accuracy and operational efficiency.
Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience performing workers' compensation premium audits or related insurance auditing functions; hands-on knowledge of workers compensation, workers comp audit procedures, and premium calculation.
- Strong understanding of NCCI rules, state rating manuals and procedures; familiarity with MWCIA or other state-specific rating organizations preferred.
- Working knowledge of payroll, payroll taxes, tax reporting (e.g., 941, W-2, 1099), and general ledger review techniques.
- Experience with insurance audit or policy administration systems and proficiency with Microsoft Excel for data analysis.
- Excellent attention to detail, analytical skills, and the ability to interpret financial records and apply complex rating rules.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with insureds, agents, underwriters and internal stakeholders.
- Ability to travel to client sites and maintain a valid drivers license; comfortable conducting on-site audits and working independently.
- Associate or Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Risk Management or equivalent work experience. Certifications such as Certified Premium Auditor (CPAuditor), CPCU, ARM or similar are a plus.
