BUS MONITOR

The position exists to assist the driver in the safe operation of the route.
Starting wage is $15.68 per hour on July 1, 2026
Schedule varies based on route.
Essential functions:
- Assists the driver with route directions and stop locations.
- Remains alert to monitor the welfare and safety of passengers while en route.
- Keeps order on the bus.
- Communicates behavior problems and conditions of various stops with the driver.
- Assists in pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus, including child checks.
- Assists students in the loading and unloading process.
- Cooperates and communicates with school personnel, parents and students.
- Attends all safety and training meetings.
- As necessary, conducts emergency evacuation from the bus, including exiting from the emergency door.
- Opens and closes service doors and moves up and down steps multiple times daily.
- Cleans the inside of the bus including securement equipment, sweeping, dusting and outside windows of the bus.
- Assists the driver whenever necessary to safely direct the vehicle.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Essential skills and abilities:
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to possess a calm demeanor when dealing with students, parents and school personnel.
- Ability to walk up and down bus stairs; exit through emergency door when necessary.
- Ability to evacuate bus, if necessary, including the ability to lift at least 40 pounds.
- Ability to ride on bus in extremely hot or cold temperatures, and all types of weather including snow, sleet, rain, etc. for an extended period of time.
- Ability to fasten and unfasten physical restraint.
- Ability to manage high levels of stress.
- Ability to recognize and report safety hazards.
- Respect for student, teachers, parents, and support staff.
- Ability to move throughout building and in the surrounding facility outside the office (i.e. bus parking lot).
Basic requirements:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Be able to pass the annual physical as prescribed by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for the operation of a school bus, including PPD or X-ray for tuberculosis screen. Successfully pass random, periodic, and post-accident drug and alcohol tests in accordance with DOT regulations.
- Previous experience working with children preferred.

Buses, fueling equipment, cleaning equipment.
Work environment:
- Work is primarily performed inside of a vehicle. School buses can become extremely hot (interior temperatures up to + 120 F.) during some months of the year, or cold during winter months. Interior noise levels can become very high when passengers are on board.
- While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, hear, walk, stand, reach, bend, stoop, crouch, squat and kneel.
