Certified Medical Assistant - Digestive Health Institute

Orlando Health Digestive Health Institute is an international destination for care, offering comprehensive and coordinated services to evaluate, diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions affecting the digestive tract and gastrointestinal organs. The institute brings internationally recognized digestive disease care to a new state-of-the-art facility in downtown Orlando as well as several satellite sites conveniently located within the Orlando Health system.

Position Summary: Oversees the scheduling and preregistration duties including patient demographic validation, insurance benefit verification, prior authorizations, referrals, and follow-up care. Provides support to physicians, advanced practice providers and operational leadership by developing and coordinating provider assignments to ensure optimal coverage. Experience preferred.

Location: Horizon West

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

Responsibilities:

  • Accountable to the Assistant Nurse Manager, Nursing Operations Manager, or Practice Manager for operational issues.
  • Embraces and participates in quality initiatives, goal attainment, and clinical outcome process improvement activities.
  • Supports and demonstrates effective and professional communication with patients and family members.
  • Works collaboratively with the administrative and operations staff.
  • Gathers patient data through interview and observation.
  • Assists patients and families with preparation for examination.
  • Assists the physician during examination and procedures.
  • Demonstrates competency in specific tasks and skills as defined by the practice.
  • Provides routine treatments and administers approved medication types as ordered by the provider.
  • Enters medication, laboratory and diagnostic imaging orders into the electronic medical system under direction of a provider.
  • Documents patient data, treatments, procedures, and patient education according to Orlando Health and department specific policies.
  • Assists the physician by acting as a liaison on behalf of the patient to schedule, provide patient with scheduling information to obtain specialty testing, and/or specialty physician consultation.
  • Processes incoming and outgoing calls in an independent and professional manner using sound clinical judgment.
  • Helps develop and coordinate the orientation process in the assigned practice for Medical Assistants.
  • Acts as preceptor and/or oversees assigned preceptor(s) in collaboration with nursing/clinical leadership and corporate Learning Consultant.
  • Supports and helps develop quality strategies within the practice.
  • Helps to facilitate and participate in the skills portion of the Annual Clinical Review for Medical Assistants.
  • Collaborates with the clinical leadership and education to assess ongoing competence of Medical Assistants.
  • Leads and participates in departmental committees and special projects.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

Other Related Functions:

  • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and have the ability to assess data appropriate to the age-specific needs of the patients on his or her assigned department and/or unit.
  • Demonstrates awareness of medical/legal issues, patient rights and compliance with standards of regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  • Practices the efficient use of supplies.
  • Assists business office as needed with reception, scheduling, and discharge of patients.

Qualifications:

  • Education/Training: High school graduate or equivalent. Successful completion of Medical Assistant training from an approved technical school (or at least one (1) year of verifiable and applicable work experience as a Medical Assistant in a patient care setting) required.
  • Licensure/Certification: Maintains current BLS Healthcare Provider Certification and Maintains current certification or registration by one of the following agencies:
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) by National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
  • Clinical Medical Assistant Certification (CMAC) by the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA)
  • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) by National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) or Nationally Registered Certified Advanced Medical Assistant (NRCAMA) by the National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) by American Medical Technologists (AMT), the American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA), or by American Allied Health (AAH)
  • Applicants with an accepted Medical Assistant certification or registration from an agency not listed will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
