Job Description

About the Company

We are partnering with a highly innovative, venture-backed insurance technology business to appoint a Chief Financial Officer who will play a pivotal role in the next phase of the company's development. The business is building a new generation of technology-enabled property insurance, combining deep insurance expertise with proprietary AI capabilities to rethink how complex property risk can be understood, priced and underwritten. Having established its initial platform and market proposition, the company is now entering a transformational phase: scaling the existing business while building the financial and operational foundations of a new insurance carrier. This is not a conventional CFO appointment. The successful individual will work directly alongside the CEO, founders and investors to help determine how the company grows, how capital is deployed, how the carrier is structured and how the financial infrastructure required to support significant future scale is built. For an ambitious insurance finance executive, this represents an opportunity to help build a carrier rather than inherit one.

About the Role

Reporting directly to the CEO, the CFO will become one of the most important members of the executive leadership team. The mandate combines strategic finance, corporate development, capital strategy, FP&A and financial infrastructure creation. While ensuring that appropriate accounting, reporting and financial controls exist will naturally form part of the CFO's responsibilities, the organisation is not looking for a purely technical accounting CFO. The priority is to appoint a commercially minded and strategically orientated finance leader who can help answer the bigger questions: How should we build the carrier? How much capital will we require? How should we deploy that capital? What does the business look like at $100m, $500m and ultimately $1bn+ of premium? What financial infrastructure needs to exist today to support the organisation we intend to become tomorrow? The CFO will take ownership of translating the company's vision into a robust financial and capital strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Partner closely with the CEO, founders and Board to develop the company’s long-term financial strategy.
  • Build sophisticated three-to-five-year financial plans covering growth, profitability, capital requirements and different strategic scenarios.
  • Develop the financial framework required to understand the economics of the existing business and future carrier.
  • Create meaningful KPIs and management information that allow leadership to understand the drivers of performance and make faster, better-informed decisions.
  • Provide financial insight into: Pricing and underwriting economics, Loss performance, Growth and distribution, Customer acquisition, Operating leverage, Reinsurance, Capital utilisation, Portfolio performance, Return on capital.
  • Act as a genuine strategic business partner to the CEO, helping evaluate major commercial and strategic decisions rather than simply reporting historical financial performance.
  • Support the creation and development of the company’s insurance carrier.
  • Help develop the financial architecture required to support this transition.
  • Determine how the organisation can move from its current structure toward becoming a well-capitalised, scalable and financially sophisticated insurance carrier.
  • Work closely with existing and future investors around: Capital planning, Fundraising, Investor relations, Board reporting, Financial storytelling, Growth scenarios, Carrier capitalisation, Strategic partnerships.
  • Assess the existing outsourced and internal capabilities and determine what should be built, bought, automated or outsourced.
  • Recruit and develop the finance organisation required to support the business.

Qualifications

We are interested in meeting senior finance executives from the P&C insurance market who combine strong insurance fundamentals with a genuinely strategic and entrepreneurial mindset. Candidates could currently be operating as: CFO, Divisional CFO, Deputy CFO, Chief Accounting / Finance Officer with broader strategic responsibility, SVP / VP Finance, Head of Strategic Finance or FP&A. For the right individual, this could represent a compelling first CFO opportunity. More important than title is evidence of having helped an insurance organisation grow, scale, transform or build something meaningful.

Required Skills

  • Strong FP&A and long-range planning experience, including building financial models that help leadership understand different growth and capital scenarios.
  • Evidence of operating as a commercial partner to CEOs and senior leadership teams.
  • Ability to move comfortably between detailed financial analysis and high-level strategic decision-making.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience working within a rapidly growing insurance company, InsurTech, MGA or carrier.
  • Demonstrable track record of creating or materially transforming financial infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of P&C insurance economics.
  • Experience within property insurance would be particularly attractive, especially exposure to: CAT-exposed property, Coastal property, Homeowners, Commercial property, E&S property, Specialty property.
  • Knowledge of reinsurance, regulatory capital, statutory reporting or carrier formation would also be valuable.
