This position is located on-site in our Pensacola, FL shipyard
Birdon America, Inc. is seeking a Shipfitter Class 1 to join our growing team at Birdon's new Port of Pensacola location. This is an excellent opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills with a growing company as we build a new Advanced Maritime Manufacturing Center (AMMC).
Selected candidates will train and work in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, for approximately 30 days before transferring to the Pensacola location. Travel will be reimbursed.
Key Responsibilities
Lay out, fit, align, and assemble structural components according to drawing specifications, and work instructions.
Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and measurement requirements to ensure accurate fit-up and fabrication.
Cut, grind, tack weld, and prepare steel and aluminum materials using appropriate hand and power tools.
Check dimensions and alignment of fitted materials to maintain quality standards and reduce rework.
Identify fit-up issues, material concerns, or drawing discrepancies and communicate them promptly to the Foreman.
Operate tools and equipment safely while following company safety procedures, housekeeping expectations, and production standards.
Support production schedules by working effectively with welders, Foreman, and other team members to complete assigned tasks.
Requirements/Qualifications
3 to 5 years of experience in the ship/boat building industry as a structural fitter.
- Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
Must be able to read blueprints.
Must be able to tack weld.
Must be proficient in layout and cutting of steel and aluminum using required tools.
Must possess the basic tools required to perform shipfitters duties.
Excellent math skills with the ability to read a tape measure and other measuring devices.
Must maintain dimensional accuracy of materials to be fitted.
Excellent problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to operate equipment safely and comply with all safety standards.
Demonstrate strong work ethic.
Must be able to recognize fit up issues and relay to Foreman.
Must be able to operate power tools (grinders, saws, drills, etc.).
Demonstrate consistency in quality of work with minimal to no discrepancies.
Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
Must be able to stand, bend, stoop, squat or kneel regularly, as well as climb stairs and ladders and enter confined spaces to complete tasks.
Shipfitter applicants will undergo a written examination and depending on results may also undergo a hands on mock-up test, as well as a tack welding and burning/washing evaluation.
