Fleet Mechanic

Reports To: Shop Supervisor/Director of Transportation

Work Days: 12 Months 240 Days - Salary: Salary Schedule 62-14 ($46,235 $59,628)

Location: Transportation Department

Job Description: To assist in providing safe, economical, and efficient Transportation Services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Routinely required to communicate verbally and in writing, and read and comprehend technical writing.
  • Moderate walking, standing, climbing, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling and reaching.
  • Routinely required to lift, push, and pull heavy objects.
  • Work daily outside and inside in varying climates including hot, cold, dampness and humidity.
  • Work around machinery with moving parts, moving objects, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline and diesel fuel.
  • Examine vehicles to determine extent of damage or malfunctions.
  • Test drive vehicles, and test components and systems, using equipment such as compression gauges and computerized diagnostic devices.
  • Repair, reline, replace, and adjust brakes.
  • Review work orders and discuss work with supervisor.
  • Follow checklists to ensure all important parts are examined, including belts, hoses, steering systems, brake and fuel systems, wheel bearings, and other potentially troublesome areas.
  • Plan work procedures using charts, technical manuals and experience.
  • Test and adjust repaired systems to meet manufacturers' performance specifications.
  • Confer with drivers to obtain descriptions of vehicle problems.
  • Perform routine and scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrications and tune-ups.
  • Disassemble units and inspect parts for wear.
  • Repair and service air conditioning, heating, engine-cooling, and electrical systems.
  • Install and repair accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors and windshield wipers.
  • Repair automatic transmissions.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and attends board provided training when needed.
  • Must be willing and capable of operating a school bus as needed to support student transportation needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent. Associates/Technical degree preferred.
  • Valid Alabama driver's License, CDL, and Alabama school bus driver's license. (Class "B" commercial driver's license with "P" and "S" endorsements)
  • Minimum two (2) years successful experience as diesel and/or auto mechanic; ASE certifications including diagnostic skills preferred.
  • Computer proficiency, experience with computerized inventory control program.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Must meet and maintain standards required by city vehicle insurance policy.
  • Subject to drug tests as required by law and school board policy for transporting students and operating school owned vehicles.
  • Must pass physical examination in accordance with the provisions of Section 16-27-4.1 of the Code of Alabama 1975.
