Virginia Highlands Community College (VHCC) is a member of the Virginia Community College System and is located in historic Abingdon, Virginia. VHCC is accredited by the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges and serves the City of Bristol, Virginia; Washington County, Virginia; and the western portion of Smyth County, Virginia. The college offers comprehensive instruction to more than 3,000 students in occupational-technical areas, college transfer programs, continuing education, developmental education, general education and specialized regional and community service areas


VHCC seeks a dynamic, full-time faculty member to join the School of Health Professions. The primary responsibility of a faculty member at VHCC is to provide quality instruction. VHCC faculty are expected to excel in teaching strategies, classroom and clinical management that fully engage students in a classroom, laboratory, or online platform, and engage students in individual related activities. VHCC faculty help students develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to build stronger citizens within the community. All faculty must be available to teach day, evening, and weekend classes.


Full-time teaching faculty members are responsible for teaching courses offered in traditional, hybrid, and distance learning formats. Full-time 9-month faculty positions carry a normal teaching load of 12-15 credit hours and 15-20 contact hours per semester. Faculty members also serve as faculty advisors, serve on school/college committees, participate in curriculum development, and maintain currency in their discipline.


VHCC faculty are expected to meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports in a timely manner; teach the courses using established texts; conduct requisite student conferences; hold required office hours; attend to assigned school and college duties; contribute to the development of the program of instruction; adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with college policies, procedures, and regulations; answer emails in a responsible manner; maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization; and advise students.


The successful candidate in this position will also serve as program chair for the Health Sciences and Nurse Aide certificate programs.


This is a full-time nine-month teaching position. Reappointment will be based on performance evaluations and institutional needs.


KSAs/Qualifications:


Required



  • Bachelors degree in nursing from a regionally accredited institution;

  • Active, unexpired Commonwealth of Virginia licensure as a registered nurse with no restrictions (if current licensure is with another state or is not active, applicant must be able to obtain or renew licensure with the Commonwealth of Virginia);

  • At least two (2) years of full-time direct care experience. Part-time experience will be converted to its full-time equivalent;

  • CPR Instructor certification for Healthcare Providers (AHA) or the willingness to obtain the certification within the first year of employment;

  • Clinical experience and/or teaching experience (didactic) in college or university setting.


KSAs:



  • Ability to meet the instruction standards for qualified Masters prepared experienced registered nurse for teaching campus and clinical labs and didactic.

  • Ability to teach assigned evening, and/or weekend classes

  • Ability to teach various courses in the designated discipline/field of study (Health, Nurse Aide, and clinical settings).

  • Ability to teach in traditional, hybrid, and distance learning formats.

  • Have knowledge of and be able to serve as faculty advisors, conduct requisite office hours, and conduct student conferences

  • Ability to serve on assigned school/college committees and participate in curriculum development


Preferred



  • Masters degree in nursing from a regionally accredited institution;

  • At least one-year direct care clinical experience in a long-term care setting;

  • Experience teaching health courses such as medical terminology, nutrition, and other related health courses;

  • Experience teaching didactic and/or clinical for nurse aide program, practical nursing program, or ADN (Nursing) program;

  • Previous academic experience teaching at a community college and/or career technical center associated with a healthcare program.
