Health Services Paraprofessional

To provide quality health services to students and staff under the direction of the district nurse and the building principal.

Primary Customers: Internal: Site staff External: Students, parents

Education/Certification:

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Health related education or LPN preferred.
• Certified in CPR and appropriate First Aid within one month of date of hire.
• Participation in School Health Para Professional training within one year of hiring.
• Health experience and experience with children required.

Understanding of child development.

Ability to keep accurate records.

Knowledge of State of Minnesota and school policies and procedures, state immunization requirements and communicable diseases.

Knowledge of health and first aid procedures.

Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.

1. Respond to students and staff first aid and illness concerns. Follow procedures for management of injury or illness on presenting symptoms. Provide immediate first aid to students and staff who are injured and assist with accessing medical care. Provide necessary reports and communicate details of incident to site administrator or employee's supervisor as appropriate. RESULT: Safe management of health needs of students. Injured students and staff are provided first aid according to procedures and appropriate forms are completed or provided to employee or student.

2. Communicate student health concerns to parents, licensed school nurse or medical personnel as needed. Provide appropriate documentation of illness and accidents. Provide communicable disease information to parents as directed by procedures or the LSN. Share information with school staff and

building principal when appropriate, always keeping confidentiality issues in mind. RESULT: Accurate health information is communicated between parents and school staff with attention to confidentiality issues.

3. Provide medications and nursing procedures as delegated by the LSN under the Nurse Practice Act. Assist the LSN with scheduling and locating students for nursing procedures and assessments. Plan for management of medication administration, first aid and illness management on school sponsored field trips. RESULT: Students are provided with appropriate delegated and direct nursing care effectively and efficiently.

4. Scheduling. Assist with scheduling, set-up and coordination of screening and appropriate health education programs. RESULT: Students are provided screening according to state recommendations. The LSN has assistance in providing health education programs.

5. Report concerns regarding student issues. Issues to report include: excessive absenteeism, frequent health room visits or suspected child abuse issues to LSN. Work with LSN to communicate necessary life-threatening conditions, health concerns and screening information to appropriate staff. RESULT: Student needs/issues are communicated to appropriate staff to assure safety and access to education.

6. Compliance with immunization requirements. Assure compliance with immunization requirements to be enrolled in Minnesota Schools. RESULT: Students are fully immunized or have proof of exemption to increase protection from communicable disease.

7. Maintain health room supplies. Inventory, maintain, and order supplies for health room. RESULT: The school is prepared to provide service to students and staff.

8. Maintain required reporting. Solicit student records to obtain health information, file student health records, complete state forms and reports, and correspondence pertaining to school health services with school district and Licensed School Nurse. RESULT: District conforms to state health standards, proper policies and procedures are followed, and forms are accurate and up to date.

9. Other duties as assigned.

Students and staff health and first-aid needs are managed promptly and respectfully following established procedures.

Parents are informed of student health concerns.

Appropriate school district staff are aware of student health needs and treatment with special attention to confidentiality issues.

State Health Department policies and procedures are adhered to.

Documentation related to students and staff health issues are provided.
