We are recruiting two full-time daytime Solid Tumor Oncology Hospitalists at UPMC Shadyside.

The successful candidates will be board-certified or board-eligible Internal Medicine physicians who will provide inpatient care to adults with solid tumor malignancies.

This is a daytime-only position with 12-hour in-hospital shifts based on a published schedule and no overnight shifts.


Position Overview

The physicians will evaluate and manage hospitalized patients with solid tumor malignancies, coordinate care with outpatient oncology teams, and provide a comprehensive handoff to the overnight clinical team at the end of each shift.


Clinical Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and admit patients from the emergency department, outpatient oncology clinics, and referring hospitals.

  • Provide inpatient medical management for adults with solid tumor malignancies.

  • Assess and manage acute medical issues and complications related to cancer and cancer-directed treatment.

  • Respond to changes in clinical condition and stabilize patients experiencing urgent or emergent medical problems.

  • Initiate appropriate diagnostic evaluations and treatment plans.

  • Manage common oncology-related complications, including infection, febrile neutropenia, sepsis, pain, electrolyte abnormalities, respiratory compromise, and treatment-related toxicities.

  • Coordinate consultations with appropriate medical and surgical specialists.

  • Communicate regularly with each patient's outpatient oncology team regarding the inpatient plan of care.

  • Support safe and efficient transitions between inpatient and outpatient oncology care.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work collaboratively with medical oncologists, advanced practice providers, nursing, pharmacy, care management, and ancillary teams.

  • Participate in multidisciplinary discussions regarding complex oncology patients.

  • Provide clear verbal and written handoffs to the overnight clinical team.

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record.

  • Escalate clinical or operational concerns to the appropriate service leadership.

Quality and Education

  • Participate in quality-improvement, patient-safety, and clinical review initiatives.

  • Contribute to the education and mentorship of residents, fellows, and advanced practice providers as appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.

  • Completion of an accredited Internal Medicine residency.

  • Board certification or board eligibility in Internal Medicine.

  • Eligibility for an unrestricted Pennsylvania medical license.

  • Experience in hospital medicine or caring for patients with cancer is preferred.

  • Strong clinical judgment, communication skills, and commitment to multidisciplinary care.
