With little or no assistance, the Machine Operator Level A operates and performs advanced set-ups on various manual and automated machines. Level A operators can operator most, if not all manual, automated and conventional numerically controlled machines demonstrating advanced cross training flexibility.
Essential Functions:
- Studies blueprints, manuals, dispatch specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations and setup requirements
- Performs pre-operational inspections
- Fully operate multiple machines as needed, including manual and conventional CNC machines (lathe and mills)
- Performs complex set-ups without assistance on a number of machines
- Operates machines on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings
- Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials on machines
- Runs parts through certain processes based on product specifications, such as; Automated welding, Sheer & Brake presses, Automated and manual saws, Swaging, Polishing, Draw Bench, and Roto Draw machines and Vacuum Furnaces, HON machines, Straightening, Flattening and Roll-Flow machines, Gun Drill and Heat Treat
- Assemble parts and/or pieces adhering to blueprints or dispatch sheets
- Verifies conformance of finished workpieces to specifications
- Place finished parts into boxes and send to inspection
- Package and stage finished parts
- Track time on each function or task by maintaining time records on BAMC
- Conducts trouble shooting with minimal or no assistance, identifies and resolves problems
- Assists Level B operators with diagnostic failures
Non-Essential Functions:
- In accordance with Company policies, promote safety by working in a safe manner at all times
- Cross-train on other machines to be able to operate as required
- Operate alternate machines at times as required
- Sweep and maintain clean area surrounding machine
- Remove any trash from work area
- Write up completed job orders, keeping notes for self-improvement
- Maintain traveler package, generate traceable paperwork
- Maintain Quality records
- Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers or others to resolve machining problems
- Perform other duties as assigned by management
Minimum Experience:
- 5 years' experience as a machine operator
- Requires good mechanical skills and background
- Or at the discretion of the hiring manager
Minimum Education:
- High school graduate or GED required
- Or at the discretion of the hiring manager
Certifications/Licenses:
- Forklift, Crane operator certified, preferred but not required
Skills & Abilities:
- Must be accurate and detailed with minimum errors

Supervisory Responsibilities:
- This position does not have any supervisory responsibility
Work Environment:
- Machine shop with well-lit workspaces and task lighting with anti-fatigue mats
Physical Demands/Conditions:
- Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull at least 50lbs unassisted on a regular basis in order to load and unload equipment and move finished goods
- Ability to stand on a non-fatigue mat about 85% of the work day
- The employee is frequently required to walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear
- Able to bend, stoop, knee, squat
- Specific vision requirements for this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception, requires use of safety glasses
- Employee is required to be alert to detail and use caution around moving material
- Employee may occasionally be required to sit, balance, stoop and/or crawl
- Noise level is usually high and required the use of hearing protection
- While performing the duties of the job, employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, chemicals, airborne particles, fumes and extreme heat

Functional Competencies:
- Conventional Machine Knowledge Experienced with manual and automated machines, such as lathes, mills and conventional CNC's
- Troubleshooting Knowledge Able to perform troubleshooting operations and assist lower level operators
- Calibration Knowledge - Proficient with measurement tools such as dial indicators, bore gauges, micrometers, calipers and other inspection tools
- Equipment Operation Experience with driving sit down forklifts and operating cranes.
- Product Quality Knowledge Monitor the products for quality, imperfections and conducting test runs
- Leadership Effectiveness Assists with orienting and training new staff or cross training existing staff, shares expertise with others.
