Qualifications
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.
The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is:
Physical Effort: Required to do some heavy lifting, 65 pounds or over, and carrying for short distances. However, lift trucks, hoists and cranes are available for the movement and placement of heavy machinery. Assignments are performed in standing, kneeling, stooping and, at times, in awkward positions. Position requires the ability to climb ladders and work at various height levels. Muscular effort will be exerted in lifting, holding and positioning of equipment.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in well-lighted, adequately heated buildings with concrete floors. Occasionally, may be required to work in unheated areas or outside. Hazards exist due to the movement of heavy machinery by overhead cranes, Iift trucks and jib cranes. Subject to burns from hot metal chips. Hazards include moving machinery, flying objects fumes, odors, dusts, skin irritation from abrasive compounds, coolants, lubricants, etc. Incumbent is exposed to heat, light and sparks form welding operations. Wears safety glasses, safety shoes, gloves and other protective equipment as required. Travel to other sites is required approximately 25% of the time.
Additional information
Temporary duty assignments may be required to perform special in place, on-site machining, grinding, welding and/or fabrication operations. This work may be required stateside or at foreign locations. Some work may be performed on board US ships. The work may be performed with other trades.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Pennsylvania Driver's License.

Duties
- As a Machinist, you will be responsible for the following duties:
- If Selected at the WG-08 or WG-11 levels, duties will be performed in a developmental capacity.
- Incumbent participates in formal and on-the-job training designed to prepare him/her for advancement to the target level based on completion of training, supervisor's recommendation, and availability of work at time of promotion.
- Manufactures and repairs machine parts and components in support of the Industrial Plant Equipment (IPE) repair program.
- Assists in the design, manufacturing of complex parts and equipment from castings, metals and other materials through use of conventional machine tools involving unusual trade problems and requiring a high degree of ingenuity and responsibility.
- Reverse engineers worn parts for remanufacturing and assists in design of new parts and assemblies for machine tool retrofit.
- Sets up and operates a variety of conventional machine tools such as lathes, vertical, horizontal, and boring milling machines, planers, grinders, threading, and drills to accomplish untried procedures and prototypes.
- Uses conventional machines for compound angels with compound curves, indexing, multi-lead, worm, and irregular threads, and gears. Surfaces with closely unified dimensions, or complex patterns that require special adaptation of machine tools.
- Assumes the responsibility of projects by planning and coordinating the efforts of other workers on large, multi-part, or extended projects.
- Fabricates complex-compound (multi-angle) weldments for machine tool retrofit and sheet metal guarding using forming, welding equipment and Sheet metal machinery such as rollers, welders and torches and shears etc.
