Medical Technologist I - PRN

Job Summary

Medical technologist supports high quality laboratory testing in a clinical laboratory. Responsibilities include preparing specimens for testing, performing routine and specialized laboratory tests, quality control, troubleshooting quality control errors, maintaining instruments, evaluating computer data problems, performing preventative maintenance, communicating technical information to medical and lay persons, training laboratory personnel, participating in continuing education, recognizing normal and abnormal values, and modeling Standards of Behavior in daily interactions and activities.

Responsibilities

• Prepare specimens for testing
• Perform routine laboratory tests
• Perform specialized laboratory tests
• Conduct quality control procedures
• Identify and troubleshoot quality control errors
• Execute preventative maintenance on laboratory instruments
• Evaluate computer data and diagnose related issues
• Assist in training laboratory personnel on routine procedures
• Participate in continuing education
• Recognize normal and abnormal laboratory values
• Model Standards of Behavior in daily interactions and activities

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a related medical or scientific discipline with 0–1 year of experience.

License, Certification, and Registration

Must have met the educational requirements for and passed a recognized Certification Examination for Medical Technologist (also known as Medical Laboratory Scientist, MLS, or Clinical Laboratory Scientist, CLS). Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC). If not certified, the candidate must be registry eligible and successfully obtain certification within the first year of employment.

(infrequent), exerting up to 50 lbs. of force (frequent), maintaining 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes (continuous), seeing and recognizing objects close at hand or at a distance (continuous), matching or discriminating between colors (continuous), determining distance/relationship between objects; depth perception (continuous), good peripheral vision capabilities (continuous), maintaining hearing acuity, with correction (continuous), performing gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements (continuous), dealing effectively with stressful situations (continuous), working rotating shifts (frequent), working overtime as required (frequent), working in a latex safe environment (continuous), maintaining tactile sensory functions (continuous), maintaining good olfactory sensory function (continuous), and being qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required.
