Position Overview
The Orthodontic Dental Assistant plays a key role in supporting the orthodontist and clinical team in delivering high-quality patient care. This role requires strong clinical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to create a welcoming and comfortable experience for patients of all ages.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the orthodontist during clinical procedures
- Prepare and sterilize instruments and treatment rooms
- Take dental impressions, digital scans, and photographs
- Place and remove orthodontic appliances under doctor supervision (brackets, wires, bands, etc., per state regulations)
- Adjust archwires and change elastics as directed
- Take orthodontic X-rays in compliance with state guidelines
- Educate patients on oral hygiene, appliance care, and treatment expectations
- Maintain accurate patient records and clinical notes
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, and infection control protocols
- Support efficient patient flow and operatory turnover
- Assist with inventory management and stocking supplies
Qualifications
- Prior dental assisting experience required (orthodontic experience preferred)
- Dental Assistant certification as required by state
- Orthodontic assisting experience or certification (if applicable)
- X-ray certification (as required by state)
- CPR/BLS certification preferred
- Experience with dental software (Dentrix, Ortho2, Open Dental, etc.) preferred
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
