Job Description
ProspectBue is working with a Richmond, Virginia law firm seeking a Paralegal to join its Capital Finance and Real Estate practice. The successful candidate will provide substantive support to attorneys and other timekeepers across a range of matters, including preparation and organization of legal documents, legal and regulatory research, transaction and case support, and other practice-related assignments.
This individual will also take an active role in team and office initiatives and will help implement operational priorities established by firm leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage assigned work in accordance with the firm's billable-hour and timekeeping requirements. Seek opportunities for billable assignments, including work with attorneys and teams in other offices when appropriate.
- Record time accurately and consistently throughout each workday and enter time into the firm's designated billing and accounting systems in accordance with firm policies and applicable outside-counsel requirements.
- Follow all applicable professional responsibility and ethical standards governing the performance of paralegal duties.
- Apply working knowledge of federal, state, and local procedural requirements. Monitor changes to applicable rules and communicate relevant updates to attorneys and other members of the team.
- Research statutes, regulations, case law, legal publications, and other authoritative sources relevant to litigation, transactions, regulatory matters, and other assigned projects.
- Evaluate and organize research findings and prepare summaries, reports, and other written materials for attorney review and use in developing legal strategies or addressing client matters.
- Assist with drafting, revising, assembling, and finalizing legal documents and related materials.
- Provide support for client meetings, closings, hearings, trials, and other proceedings or events as requested.
- Gather and organize information from electronic workspaces, legal research resources, reference materials, discovery materials, practice guides, regulations, and other sources.
- Establish, maintain, and organize electronic workrooms or other document repositories and coordinate with clients and their representatives regarding required documentation.
- Respond to routine requests for information and communicate with clients and other parties when appropriate and within the scope of assigned responsibilities.
- Prepare routine correspondence, internal memoranda, file memoranda, and other basic case- or transaction-related documents.
- Use the firm's approved technology platforms and demonstrate proficiency with applicable legal, document-management, research, and productivity tools.
- Maintain client files in accordance with the firm's records and file-management requirements. Ensure that both electronic and physical materials are properly organized, labeled, stored, and accessible throughout the life of each matter.
- Maintain centralized matter files, including appropriate barcoding and labeling of physical files and proper organization of electronic documents within the firm's document-management system.
- Assist with the timely completion and closing of matters and monitor workspaces to ensure compliance with applicable records-management procedures.
- Contribute to firm, office, and practice-group initiatives and perform additional responsibilities as assigned by management.
Required Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- College degree preferred.
- Paralegal certification, NALA certification, or a state-issued specialty certification is advantageous.
Professional Experience
- At least three years of experience in a paralegal, legal-support, or related business role.
- Prior experience coordinating the work of paralegals or case clerks is preferred.
Skills and Competencies
- Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local rules and procedures.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to use online research platforms, legal databases, document-management systems, and other technology used in a modern legal environment.
- Ability to locate, retrieve, evaluate, and organize information from electronic and legal research resources.
- Ability to train or provide guidance to other paralegals and support personnel when needed.
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, organization, and follow-through.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, adjust to changing demands, and perform effectively in a deadline-driven environment.
- Professional demeanor and strong interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills when interacting with attorneys, colleagues, clients, vendors, and other professional contacts.
- Sound judgment, discretion, patience, diplomacy, and the ability to remain composed in high-pressure situations.
- Willingness and ability to work additional hours and travel, including with limited advance notice, when business needs require.
- Ability to work collaboratively and contribute effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to receive, understand, and communicate detailed information accurately through both written and verbal channels.
