Hydronic / Dirty Utility Superintendent

The Hydronic / Dirty Utility Superintendent directs and coordinates all hydronic and process piping field activities on complex industrial construction projects. This role leads field teams, ensures safe and high-quality installation of hydronic and utility systems, and works closely with project stakeholders to achieve schedule, cost, and performance goals. The superintendent actively manages labor, materials, and field coordination while driving a strong safety culture and maintaining strict compliance with project specifications, codes, and industry standards.

Responsibilities:

• Direct and coordinate all hydronic and process piping field activities on assigned projects from mobilization through turnover.
• Supervise General Foremen, Foremen, pipefitters, welders, and subcontractors to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality work.
• Develop detailed daily and weekly work plans that support overall project milestones and production goals.
• Manage labor productivity, workforce planning, and manpower forecasting to maintain project momentum and meet schedule commitments.
• Monitor installation progress in the field and proactively address challenges, constraints, and conflicts as they arise.
• Oversee installation of chilled water, heating hot water, condenser water, glycol, process water, steam and condensate, chemical, and utility piping systems, as well as equipment piping connections.
• Verify proper installation and alignment of pumps, heat exchangers, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and related mechanical equipment.
• Coordinate hydrostatic testing, flushing, cleaning, balancing, and system startup activities for hydronic and process systems.
• Support commissioning and system turnover efforts by collaborating with project teams, commissioning agents, and owners.
• Lead and promote a strong safety culture across all field operations, setting clear expectations for safe work practices.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and site-specific safety requirements at all times.
• Conduct toolbox talks, safety meetings, and pre-task planning sessions to prepare crews for daily work activities.
• Identify and mitigate potential hazards before work begins and ensure appropriate controls are in place.
• Participate in incident investigations and support development and implementation of corrective actions.
• Ensure all installations comply with project specifications, applicable codes, industry standards, and client requirements.
• Review drawings, specifications, isometric drawings, shop drawings, and BIM coordination models to guide field installation.
• Coordinate inspections, pressure tests, weld documentation, and other quality verification activities.
• Manage punch lists, track deficiencies, and ensure all items are corrected promptly and thoroughly.
• Maintain high standards of workmanship and craftsmanship throughout all phases of construction.
• Work closely with Project Managers, Engineers, BIM/VDC teams, General Contractors, and Owners to align field execution with project objectives.
• Coordinate field activities with electrical, structural, equipment, and specialty trades to avoid conflicts and rework.
• Participate in progress meetings, planning sessions, and schedule reviews, providing accurate field status updates.
• Assist with procurement planning and material management to ensure timely delivery and availability of piping, equipment, and supplies.
• Identify and resolve field installation conflicts and constructability issues in collaboration with design and project teams.
• Develop and maintain short-term look-ahead schedules to sequence work and manage priorities in the field.
• Monitor critical path activities, identify schedule risks, and implement strategies to mitigate delays.
• Coordinate manpower and material resources to support critical activities and maintain project progress.
• Provide regular updates on progress, production rates, and potential delays to project leadership and stakeholders.

Essential Skills:

• 8+ years of industrial piping or mechanical construction experience.
• 3+ years of experience as a Superintendent, General Foreman, or Senior Foreman leading field crews.
• Extensive knowledge of hydronic and industrial piping systems, including chilled water, hot water, condenser water, glycol, process water, steam, condensate, and utility systems.
• Strong understanding of pipe fabrication, welding, testing, and commissioning processes.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, P&IDs, specifications, isometrics, shop drawings, and BIM models.
• Experience managing self-perform craft labor and subcontractors on industrial construction projects.
• Strong knowledge of industrial construction safety requirements and OSHA regulations.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to work safely on active industrial construction sites, including climbing ladders, working at heights, accessing confined spaces, standing and walking for extended periods, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Willingness to travel based on project assignments.

• Experience on semiconductor facilities and cleanroom construction projects.
• Experience on data centers and mission-critical facilities.
• Experience on industrial manufacturing plants and food and beverage processing plants.
• Experience on power and energy facilities.
• UA pipefitter apprenticeship completion or equivalent trade background.
• OSHA 30 Certification.
• Experience with Procore, Bluebeam, Navisworks, BIM 360, or similar construction management and coordination platforms.
• Familiarity with commissioning and startup procedures for complex hydronic systems.
• Knowledge of hydronic and industrial piping standards and best practices.
• Interest in contributing to the growth and expansion of a large mechanical and electrical contractor with a long-standing history in the industry.

Work Environment:

This role is based on active industrial construction sites and involves daily interaction with field crews, project teams, and multiple trades. The superintendent works in a dynamic, fast-paced environment that includes exposure to operational equipment, construction activities, and varying weather conditions. The position requires frequent walking, standing, climbing ladders, working at heights, accessing confined spaces when required, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Travel is required based on project assignments and may include work on pharmaceutical, life science, semiconductor, data center, manufacturing, power, energy, food and beverage, and cleanroom projects. The work environment emphasizes a strong safety culture, collaboration with mechanical, electrical, structural, and specialty trades, and the use of modern tools and technologies such as BIM/VDC platforms and digital construction management systems.

Job Type & Location:

This is a Permanent position based out of Raleigh, NC.

Pay and Benefits:

The pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $120000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
