Mission Health, based in Asheville, NC, is a comprehensive healthcare provider committed to improving the health and wellness of the community it serves through advanced medical services and compassionate care. We are seeking a Psych ED Registered Nurse to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team within our Emergency and Behavioral Health departments. In this role, you will provide high-quality, patient-centered nursing care to individuals experiencing acute psychiatric and behavioral health crises in a fast-paced emergency department setting.

The Psych ED Registered Nurse will perform focused and comprehensive assessments, prioritize care for patients with a wide range of psychiatric diagnoses, and collaborate closely with physicians, social workers, behavioral health specialists, and the broader interdisciplinary team to develop and implement individualized care plans. You will administer medications, monitor therapeutic responses and side effects, manage medical and psychiatric emergencies, and utilize evidence-based de-escalation techniques to maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, families, and staff.

Using strong clinical judgment and critical-thinking skills, the Psych ED Registered Nurse will perform ongoing mental status and suicide risk assessments, support crisis stabilization, and coordinate disposition planning, including admission to inpatient psychiatric units, transfer to appropriate facilities, or safe discharge with follow-up resources. You will provide education to patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, and community resources, and advocate for patient needs while maintaining dignity, respect, and trauma-informed care principles.

Mission Health fosters a collaborative environment emphasizing teamwork, respect, and professional growth. As a Psych ED Registered Nurse, you will actively participate in multidisciplinary rounds, contribute to quality and safety initiatives, and follow all regulatory, documentation, and infection-prevention standards. You will assist in orienting and mentoring new staff and students, engage in ongoing professional development to enhance psychiatric and emergency nursing competencies, and support a culture of continuous improvement.

This opportunity focuses on delivering exceptional care in a patient-centered environment with opportunities for advancement. The ideal candidate is a compassionate, resilient nurse with strong communication and de-escalation skills, comfort working with diverse and sometimes highly agitated patient populations, and the ability to maintain composure in high-acuity situations. Flexibility to work a variety of shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, is expected to meet the needs of the emergency department and the patients we serve.
