Senior Software Engineer
Apply Now**Senior Backend Software Engineer — Enterprise Data Platform**
*United Global Technologies, Inc. | Remote (U.S.) | Full-Time*
**About the Role**
UGT is seeking a Senior Backend Software Engineer to design and build the data layer, APIs, and system integrations for a mission-critical engineering data platform for an enterprise client. This is a prototype-first, greenfield build: you'll be one of the first engineers establishing the backend architecture, working in a small, fast-moving, cross-functional team with direct exposure to end users and technical leadership.
**What You'll Do**
- Design and build core backend application logic for a multi-module platform using a Python-based async web framework (e.g., FastAPI) and a typed ORM (e.g., SQLAlchemy 2.0)
- Build a workflow/statusing engine that tracks progress, sequencing, and dependency logic across interrelated application modules
- Design, build, and document REST API endpoints supporting form-driven CRUD workflows, including request/response validation schemas
- Design and implement a relational database (PostgreSQL) with version-controlled schema migrations, data integrity safeguards, and revision history
- Build integrations between the platform and external enterprise systems of record — specifically IBM DOORS Next (requirements management) and PTC Windchill (PLM) — implementing data synchronization, translation, and provenance tracking without duplicating system-of-record ownership
- Implement authentication, role-based access control, and secure credential management for external API connections
- Support CI/CD pipeline setup, version-controlled repositories, and automated build/deploy processes
- Implement backend logic to auto-generate structured reports/documents from configuration-controlled data
- Collaborate directly with front-end developers to define stable API contracts enabling independent, parallel development
- Respond to client-led security assessments and remediate findings in backend code under your responsibility
- Participate in schema, API, and workflow-engine design discussions with client technical staff; deliver small, independently reviewable code changes and migrations rather than large infrequent releases
**Required Qualifications**
- 5+ years of professional backend software development experience
- Strong hands-on experience with Python, async web frameworks (FastAPI or comparable), and typed ORMs
- Proven relational database design experience (PostgreSQL preferred) including schema migrations and data integrity practices
- Demonstrated experience designing and documenting REST APIs
- Experience integrating with enterprise systems via API (PLM, requirements-management, ALM, or similar systems of record)
- Experience implementing authentication/authorization and securing API integrations
- Comfortable working independently with minimal day-to-day oversight in an evolving-requirements, fast-iteration environment
- **Must be a U.S. Citizen** (contract requirement — no exceptions)
- Willingness to perform all work on client-furnished equipment per contract security requirements
**Preferred Qualifications**
- Direct experience with IBM DOORS Next, PTC Windchill, or comparable requirements/PLM platforms
- Prior experience supporting federally regulated or highly secure technical environments
- Familiarity with configuration management and controlled/proprietary data handling requirements
- Experience building workflow/state-machine engines or complex business-logic layers (beyond standard CRUD)
- Experience generating structured documents/reports programmatically from application data
**Why UGT**
United Global Technologies is an engineering delivery organization supporting enterprise clients on mission-critical technical programs. You'd be joining a small, senior team building a platform end users will rely on for a high-visibility, high-impact technical workflow — meaningful ownership from day one.
