Job Classification: Health Assistant

Bargaining Unit: Merged Missoula Classified Employees Organization

Reports to/supervised by: Health Services Supervisor Essential Duties and Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following.

Other job-related duties may be assigned.

A. PERFORM NURSING FUNCTIONS UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF THE ASSIGNED RN by

  • Performing healthcare procedures and tasks as outlined on Individual Health Care Plans and/or as trained, supervised and/or delegated by the RN
  • Communicating with the RN by phone, email or meeting regarding clinical issues
  • Collecting and reporting as requested by the RN and/or Health Services Supervisor

B. ACT AS A MEMBER OF THE HEALTH CARE TEAM by

  • Attending health services meetings and scheduled in-services
  • Contributing to program management by offering feedback

C. MAINTAIN HEALTH RECORDS by

  • Collecting and entering health screening data into the student electronic record
  • Placing health related forms such as health care provider communication in student health file and/or electronic record
  • Documenting health room visits, treatments, medications, or other care rendered
  • Documenting parent/guardian or RN notification regarding health matters
  • Transferring health records to requesting schools in a timely manner

D. MAINTAIN IMMUNIZATION RECORDS ON STUDENTS by

  • Being knowledgeable about current immunization laws
  • Reviewing current records for adequate documentation and notifying parent/guardians when deficiencies found
  • Maintaining the Montana State Immunization record and entering data onto student electronic record
  • Assisting with transfer of the Montana State Immunization record upon student transfer
  • Enforcing state law for exclusion for inadequate immunization and communicating with RN as needed
  • Assisting parents to obtain records or referrals for immunizations as needed
  • Preparing annual immunization report for regulatory agencies including but not limited to DPHSS and health department

E. SUBMIT REPORTS OR STATISTICS REQUIRED BY SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION by:

  • Recording requested data, compiling or summarizing as requested and submitting to administration

F. MANAGE HEALTH SCREENING PROGRAMS by

  • Obtaining the knowledge required to be able to perform screenings
  • Organizing, scheduling and performing coordination needed for completion of screening program
  • Performing screenings and recording results in student electronic file
  • Sending referrals to parents/guardians
  • Communicating with parents re: response to referrals and facilitating professional exam as indicated

G. MAINTAIN AND ADMINISTER FIRST AID AND ILLNESS MANAGEMENT/ASSESSMENT TO STUDENTS OR STAFF MEMBERS by

  • Maintaining First Aid and CPR certification
  • Providing first aid and basic response to illness by following protocols
  • Obtaining vital signs as indicated
  • Maintaining adequate first aid supplies in health office
  • Notifying RN of significant or unusual injuries, illness, or difficulty managing a health condition
  • Implementing Board policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with communicable disease when authorizing exclusion and readmission of students

H. FACILITATE HEALTH MAINTENANCE OF STUDENTS by

  • Administering Healthcare practitioner prescribed medications and treatments under the supervision of the RN
  • Reporting response to medications and treatments to the RN
  • Maintaining required documents for medications and treatments
  • Facilitating Medicaid reimbursement for medications and treatments as indicated
  • Promote preventative health actions with student and staff and serve as an example

I. MAINTAIN A COOPERATIVE AND PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH STAFF AND SUPERVISORS by

  • Establishing and maintaining effective and cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Employing flexibility and understanding in working with a multitude of psycho- social issues affecting students
  • Communicating effectively with those contacted in the course of work
  • Representing the school district in a professional manner in all settings

K. MAINTAIN A HIGH LEVEL OF ETHICAL BEHAVIOR AND CONFIDENTIALITY OF ANY INFORMATION REGARDING STUDENTS, PERSONNEL AND ALL JOB-RELATED MATTERS

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Licensure and Certification

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current CPR and first aid certification or the ability to obtain upon hire

Experience

  • Work experience with children, in schools, secretarial experience, and/or health care such as Certified Nursing Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician or Medical Assistant preferred. Current certification not required.
  • Experience and ability with electronic patient or student records, Excel and Microsoft Word preferred.

Special Requirements

  • Valid Drivers License, daily access to personal vehicle and driving skills.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and practice of school policies including health related policies.
  • Knowledge, skills and ability to perform first aid, nursing procedures and health treatments under the direct and indirect supervision of the RN.
  • Ability and skills to organize and perform job duties with limited supervision.
  • Skills, knowledge and ability with basic computer skills, word processing and data entry software
  • Ability to follow standardized health procedures and to discern when to contact RN for advisement and collaboration on clinical issues.
  • Ability and skills in interpersonal relations, problem solving, public relations, working with students and parents, prioritizing tasks and adjusting work schedule to accommodate competing demands.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of written or oral instructions
  • Ability to write reports and correspondence
  • Ability to handle stressful situations
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and or in writing, to effectively present information and/or respond to questions from students, staff and parents or guardians

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job the employee is often required to do the following: standing, sitting, walking, bending, and talking. Other requirements may include driving, lifting and/or carrying up to 30 pounds, pushing or pulling wheelchairs in excess of 100 pounds, using hands/ fingers for computer use, climbing stairs, reaching and twisting at the neck or waist. Specific corrected vision abilities include: close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to change focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job include: Working inside and occasionally being outdoors, traveling to work locations, meeting deadlines with time constraints, working both alone and as a team member, managing multiple tasks, prioritizing work load, interruptions to work, possible conflict resolution with students, working in a building that are sometimes crowded. The noise level in the work environments is usually moderate but may vary. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee may be exposed to potentially infectious bodily fluids.

Team Responsibilities: Works independently with limited daily supervision but in conjunction with RN(s) and entire school team, may need to assist co-workers or and work in multiple school sites.
