Zone Routing Specialist

Under general supervision, schedules safe and efficient school bus transportation for students in the assigned area and assists in the administration of that transportation. Job tasks include the creation and maintenance of a system of school bus routes; assignment of students to bus stops and stops to bus runs; evaluation and modification of route efficiency using the district's routing software, BusPlanner, to ensure effective distribution of resources; preparation of driver routing instructions; and maintenance of accurate transportation data and reports. Reports to the Routing Operations Administrator.

Schedules state-owned yellow school buses to transport students to and from school.

Uses BusPlanner to create and maintain morning and afternoon bus stop assignments, as well as midday, after-school, testing, and summer school transportation, ensuring safety, efficiency, and compliance with state law and local board policy. Must have working knowledge of school scheduling concepts, including school opening and dismissal times.

Assigns students to appropriate bus stops and routes, ensuring accurate and timely updates based on enrollment changes, program needs, and special circumstances.

Gathers data from school bus drivers related to bus runs and stop locations; researches and verifies street names, addresses, and road networks; and communicates updates regarding new or closed streets.

Prepares and distributes school bus route information to schools, drivers, and appropriate staff.

Generates route maps, rosters, bus passes, and reports as needed.

Assists in compiling information required for state and local transportation reporting.

When assigned to a zone serving exceptional children, evaluates transportation needs and collaborates with school staff, therapists, social workers, and families to support appropriate services for students.

Coordinates with school Data Managers to ensure accurate and complete student transportation data in Infinite Campus.

Performs de-assignment of students for non-ridership in accordance with established procedures.

Enforces local board policy, state laws, and regulations related to school bus operations and student transportation.

Responds to parental and public concerns regarding bus routing, scheduling, and operations in a professional and timely manner.

Reviews and updates bus runs weekly to ensure the most efficient routing and use of resources.

Maintains availability to respond to emergencies during times buses are in operation.

Maintains effective communication with drivers, school staff, parents, and transportation personnel; communicates clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.

Obtains and maintains a Commercial Driver License (CDL) with school bus certification and serves as a substitute driver as needed.

Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and training related to transportation operations and routing systems.

Maintains records, files, and documentation in accordance with department expectations.

Performs other Transportation Department duties as assigned.

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Experience in a transportation related field is desired. Must have knowledge and training or demonstrated ability in computer operation and use of word processing and spreadsheet programs. Basic math proficiency is required.
