Department Chair, Communication

Georgia College & State University is seeking a chair for the department of Communication. The position is a 12-month, on-campus appointment reporting to the dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. The department chair provides leadership for the department and works collaboratively with the faculty to meet the academic needs of students and foster excellence in programs, instruction, scholarly activity, and service. The department chair must have the ability to effectively manage course scheduling, budgets, personnel, and facilities; lead curriculum development; and carry out other department leadership functions, in addition to performing other duties as assigned. The chair supervises all employees in the department and administers yearly performance evaluations. The chair assesses and recommends faculty candidates for vacant positions and makes recommendations regarding faculty reappointment, tenure, and promotion.

The department chair will teach a half-load (12 contact hours) during the academic year. They will serve on elected and appointed committees and accept other duties as assigned by the dean. They will collaborate with department faculty to plan and administer the departmental budget. They will support graduates in their efforts to secure employment or gain admission to graduate or professional schools. They will participate in program review for evaluation of existing degree, accreditation, certification, and other academic programs. They will develop new programs and implement improved programs to enhance the quality of instruction, academic programs, and research. They will manage department and college facilities and equipment in a manner that promotes quality learning in classrooms and laboratories.

The minimum salary for this position is $118,000.
